Custom Web Design Wireless Applications Case Study
Quick Links
Problem:
Lack of wireless connectivity at a Professional Golf Event. Neither the private wireless data networking needs (internet connectivity to the event organizers' and vendors' trailers on-site, internet access for media, data transmission for real-time golf event scoring) nor the increasing expectation of public WiFi access (via laptops or handheld PDA's) were being adequately served by their current wired network. A revenue-generating opportunity for the Event Organizers to market merchandise, tickets, gaming and data services to their clientele on-site during the event was being ignored.
Red Cloud Solution:
By bringing in a high speed microwave link to the remote site, Red Cloud was able to provide a high speed internet access "Cloud" throughout the entire golf course grounds. This bandwidth was accessed through a private, encrypted, password-protected link for organizers and vendors to carry out essential functions and maintain connectivity to dozens of workstations across the 18,000 acre complex, including lodge and parking areas.
Free Public WiFi was also offered through a custom-designed web page, to which every WiFi user who accessed the system was driven. This web application, known as FanConnex, allowed the event organizers to offer live updates on vital event and parking information, on-line merchandise sales for easy same-day pickup, ticket sales for future events, and fantasy games to their clients at the event. Users could, of course, access the World Wide Web if they chose. The silence of data connectivity to the outside world, as opposed to voice, appealed to event organizers who are sensitive to cell phone abuse on the golf course during the tournament
Advertising sponsorships were sold to vendors who were able to load custom advertising content on the custom-designed web page, allowing the event organizers to not only pay for the cost of building the wireless Cloud, but to drive increased revenues while building their brand.
