Red Cloud Brings WiFi to the Lair of the Golden Bear
Pinecrest, CA
There are some happy campers at the Lair of the Golden Bear, as Wireless Internet Service (WiFi) is now available thoughout the camp, thanks to the efforts of Red Cloud Wireless Voice & Data.
Red Cloud was contracted by the University of California Alumni Association to design and implement a Wireless Broadband system to provide WiFi coverage to staff members and 'campers' throughout the three camps that comprise the Lair of the Golden Bear, their summer camp in Pinecrest, CA.
The Alumni Association requested a wireless system that would provide free broadband internet access to all staff and management and subscription based Hot Spot broadband internet access to their campers. The system needed to distribute their land-line broadband pipeline, from it's termination point at Camp Blue, throughout the other Camps, Oski and Gold, with additional coverage required at the Lodge, the General Stores and the dining facilities.
Red Cloud's Lead Engineer, Keith Lattin, designed a point-to-point system utilizing broadband Mesh-capable access point radios from Motorola and Tranzeo and employing weatherproof rugged antenna and cabling. To overcome topography and foliage related coverage obstructions, multiple radio hops were required.
To manage internet usage between the staff and potentially hundreds of subscribers, Red Cloud provided the Handlink ISS-6000 to serve as an internet access controller. The ISS-6000 Internet Subscriber Server is a rack mountable intelligent gateway integrated with 2 Ethernet ports that acts as a hotspot access controller and provides plug and play instant Internet access, advanced security & network management. A key benefit of the ISS-6000 is that it can be operated and managed remotely - in this case from the customer's IT department in Berkeley, California.
The system was successfully deployed and de-bugged in time for the Lair's official opening in June. According to Director of Web & IT, Christy Hopeman, and Camp Director, Mike Yaley, the first season of operation was a great success.
